AWS RES Enterprise Support and Transition
AWS support for RES is ending. Your research can keep moving.
AWS support for Research and Engineering Studio (RES) ends on September 30, 2027. Relevance Lab helps you choose what comes next: keep RES supported, extend it, or move to Research Gateway. Start with a free assessment through AWS Marketplace.

Named by AWS
AWS lists Relevance Lab among the partners supporting customers through the RES transition.
Hands-on RES experience
We have deployed and supported RES for several years, including on AWS GovCloud (US) and in multi-account identity setups.
A product of our own
Research Gateway is built for research and scientific computing, and it is available through AWS Marketplace.
What changes for RES customers
AWS announced its plan on September 29, 2026. Your environment keeps running, but the support behind it does not.
-
No more releases
RES 2026.09 is the final release. AWS has stopped developing RES and no longer promotes it for new adoption.
-
Support has an end date
After September 30, 2027, AWS provides no technical support and no security updates for RES.
-
Older versions end sooner
AWS supports each release until the end of the same month one year later. RES 2026.03 loses AWS support on March 31, 2027.
-
The software stays yours
RES remains open source under the Apache 2.0 license. Patching, fixes and upkeep become your job, or your partner's.

Three paths forward
There is no single right answer. We look at your RES environment, your research workloads and your plans, then recommend the path that fits.
Option 1
Continue with RES
Keep the environment you have. We take over the support, maintenance and security work that AWS is stepping away from.
- Day-to-day support and troubleshooting
- Security patching and compliance monitoring
- No platform change for your researchers
- Best for
- Teams that want continuity and little change in the near term.
- Keep in mind
- RES gets no new features from AWS after 2026.09.
Option 2
Fork and modernize RES
RES is open source. We fork the code for you and keep building on it, so the roadmap becomes yours.
- Custom features for your workflows
- Integration with your enterprise systems
- Ongoing engineering and maintenance
- Best for
- Organizations with heavy RES customization or specialized needs.
- Keep in mind
- A fork is yours to fund and maintain for as long as you run it.
Option 3
Transition to Research Gateway
Move to Research Gateway, our purpose-built research computing product. You get a supported platform with an active roadmap, and we plan the move in phases.
- Self-service workspaces for researchers
- Project budgets and cost tracking
- Secure environments for sensitive data
- HPC, AI and scientific computing
- Best for
- Organizations that want a modern research platform for the years ahead.
The modernization path
Beyond RES with Research Gateway
Research Gateway is a self-service portal for research computing on AWS. It brings secure research environments, cost control and AI assistance into one product, so researchers get to work without learning the cloud.
Self-service research computing
Researchers launch approved workspaces and tools without waiting on IT.
Project-centric governance
Manage researchers, resources, budgets and access around each project.
Research cost control (FinOps)
Track cloud spend by project, grant or cost code, and charge it back.
Security and Trusted Research Environments
Isolated, controlled workspaces for sensitive data such as patient or genomic records.
HPC and scientific computing
Run simulation, engineering and data-heavy workloads at scale.
AI Research Assistant
A GenAI assistant that helps researchers choose, launch and right-size environments.
From RES to Research Gateway, without disruption
We move you in six phases, so research keeps running while the platform changes.

Common questions
Will RES stop working on September 30, 2027?
No. RES is open-source software that runs in your own AWS account, and it keeps running. What ends is AWS technical support and security updates.
Why move to Research Gateway if RES keeps running?
RES will get no new features from AWS. Research Gateway is a supported product with an active roadmap, and it includes project budgets, secure research environments and an AI assistant. If RES already does what you need, staying is a sound choice, and we support that too.
We run an older RES release. Does that change anything?
Yes. Your AWS support ends sooner. AWS supports each release until the end of the same month one year later, so check your version against the AWS support policy. We also check it for you in the assessment.
Who is the free assessment for?
Any organization running AWS RES today, in the public sector or commercial. That includes universities, national laboratories, federal agencies and commercial research teams.
How do we request the free assessment?
Through AWS Marketplace. Open our listing, sign in to your AWS account and choose "Request private offer". Mention the free assessment, and we email you to set it up. Any paid work that follows is priced to your environment and the path you choose, through a private offer on the same listing.
We do not buy through AWS Marketplace. Can we still talk?
Yes. Use the contact form at the bottom of this page and tell us which path interests you.
