What is a global capability center? GCC basics
A Global Capability Center (GCC) is an offshore center owned or controlled by a multinational company to deliver technology, engineering, operations and business services for the parent organization. Unlike outsourcing, the talent, processes and intellectual property stay inside the company. Learn more on our GCC overview.
A captive center is an offshore unit that a company owns and runs to deliver technology and business services for its own global operations, rather than buying them from a vendor. Today most captive centers are called Global Capability Centers (GCCs).
The terms describe the same model: a center the company owns and controls. "Captive center" is the older term, often linked to cost-focused back-office work. "GCC" reflects today's broader mandate across engineering, data, AI and products. See Build-Operate-Transfer for a way to build one.
A captive center gives you control of talent, IP and culture, and suits long-term, strategic work. Outsourcing suits defined, commodity services where control matters less. Models like GCC as a Service and BOT combine captive-style control with a partner's speed.
In a business and technology context, GCC stands for Global Capability Center (also spelled Centre). GCCs were previously known as captive centers or global in-house centers. Today the term covers centers doing engineering, data, AI and digital work as well as operations.
Here is how a global capability center works: it acts as an extension of the parent company. It has its own leadership and teams, follows the parent's processes and priorities, and delivers work directly for business units at headquarters. It can be fully owned, hosted by a partner through GCC as a Service, or partly managed.
With outsourcing, a vendor owns the people and know-how and delivers against a contract. With a GCC, the company controls the talent, culture and intellectual property, and the center works as part of its own organization. GCCs suit long-term, strategic capability; outsourcing suits defined, commodity services.
An offshore development center is usually a vendor-run team dedicated to one client. A GCC is controlled by the client itself, often with its own entity, leadership and broader mandate across engineering, data, operations and business services.
Access to large talent pools, control over work and intellectual property, cost advantages, round-the-clock delivery, and a platform for innovation in areas such as AI, data and product engineering.
Setting up a GCC in India
Build the business case, choose a city and engagement model, set up an entity or use a hosted model, find workspace, set up IT, security, HR and payroll, hire leadership and teams, and agree governance and KPIs. The GCC Readiness Assessment is a good starting point.
With a hosted model such as GCC as a Service, a first team can start within weeks. Setting up your own entity, campus and full HR and IT infrastructure typically takes several months, depending on scale and requirements.
Cost depends mainly on team size and role mix, city, workspace type, setup costs (entity, IT, security, fit-out) and run costs (HR, payroll, facilities, compliance). Hosted models turn most setup costs into a predictable monthly fee. See GCC as a Service.
Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune, Gurgaon, Noida, Ahmedabad and Kolkata are established Tier 1 GCC hubs, and Gandhinagar is a fast-growing Tier 2 option. Each has different strengths in talent, cost and infrastructure. The best choice depends on the skills you need and your growth plans. See Real Estate & Workspace.
Not necessarily. Most owned GCCs use a wholly owned private limited subsidiary, but GCC as a Service lets you start without one. See Legal & Compliance for entity options.
Engagement models
It depends on your stage. First-time GCCs often start with GCC as a Service; established centers needing specialist depth choose a Managed GCC; stalled centers benefit from GCC Transformation. The readiness assessment recommends a fit.
GCC as a Service is a model where a partner provides a fully operational GCC (entity, workspace, IT, HR, payroll, compliance and delivery management) while the client directs a dedicated team. It is the fastest way to launch. Learn more.
A Managed GCC is a model where the client owns its center and a partner runs selected specialist functions such as AI, cloud, DevOps, data or cybersecurity under SLAs. Learn more.
In our BOT model, we build your GCC in Relevance Lab's office, run it for an agreed period, then transfer the team and operations to your own entity as your captive center. It suits companies that want ownership without the setup risk. Learn more.
We support GCC due diligence, Day 1 planning, post-merger integration or consolidation, carve-outs and TSA exit, while keeping talent and delivery stable through the deal. Learn more.
GCC transformation redesigns an existing center's operating model, talent, technology and delivery so it moves from executing tasks to owning products and innovation, a shift often called GCC 2.0. Learn more.
Yes. Many companies start with GCC as a Service, then take ownership or move to a Managed GCC as the center matures. A good partner plans for these transitions from day one.

Locations
We build GCCs in the Tier 1 hubs of Mumbai, Pune, Gurgaon, Noida, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Kolkata, and in the Tier 2 city of Gandhinagar.

Working with Relevance Lab
GCC setup is offered by specialist enablers, consulting firms and technology companies. Relevance Lab combines setup and operations with engineering, AI, platforms and FinOps, which suits companies that want the center to deliver technology value early. See Why Relevance Lab.
Seven engagement models (GCC as a Service, Build-Operate-Transfer, Managed GCC, Transformation, Optimization, Scale Up and Mergers & Acquisitions), ten operational capabilities from talent to compliance, and industry experience in insurance, HR technology, healthcare, research and ISVs.
Yes. We help established centers add specialist depth, improve productivity and cost, scale with new CoEs, and transform into AI-first innovation hubs.
